Imported files are represented as parts and subparts. To edit the structure of the part, for example manage some subparts as a separate part, use the Grouping command.
Part
An imported polygonal mesh or CAD part file will be represented as a single part in the application.
A part can also be seen as a single line the Parts List.
Subpart
Each part can consist of one or several subparts, which are separate meshes (clusters) in the part. A polygonal mesh file assembly may have several subparts included. Subparts are not visible and cannot be selected in the Parts List tree.
Most commands use part for assigning and selecting, such as Transform command. Some commands use subparts for assigning or selecting, such as Material command.
Assemblies
There are two types of assemblies that can be imported, CAD or polygonal mesh-type. An assembly in a CAD format, such as .sldasm, will import as separate parts. But assemblies inside a single polygonal mesh file will import as a single part. Use the Combine / Separate command to separate such an assembly.
